Tianyi Museum is a 31,000 m2themed museum featuring book collections. As a cluster of buildings, the museum includes Tianyi Library, the East and Southern gardens, the Art Gallery, and the Qin Ancestral Hall, a nationally acclaimed relic building.The museum has been designated as a national site for conserving ancient buildings and books. With its rich book collections, elegant ancient buildings, and convenient transportation, it is visited by 300, 000 people every year from all over the world.

The Tianyi Museum, built in 1561 AD to 1566, is the oldest existing private library in China, and one of the oldest in the world. The original owner was Fanqin, the Vice Minister of National Defense in the Ming Dynasty. It now houses 300, 000 volumes of books, most precious of which are local chronicles and records of imperil examinations. Our museum has grown rapidly in recent years, incorporating new buildings such as Mahjong Exhibition Hall and the Qin Ancestral Hall. The former exhibits the evolution of mahjong and its development in Ningbo; the latter features Chinese family culture and traditional handicrafts, and is thus recognized as a national relic site.

White Cloud Mansion is a traditional Chinese building originally owned byWan Tai, an official in the Finance Ministry in the Ming Dynasty. The name, White Cloud, was derived from the White Cloud Collection,a book written by the owner’s 5th son, Wan Sixuan. Huang Zongxi, a well-known scholar in the Ming Dynasty, used to deliver lectures in this mansion, and so for a long period the mansion served as a venue for scholarly discussions. The mansion covers 650 m2. It faces the west and comprises courtyards. All of its buildings are made of wood and bricks. In the south lies the former residence of Wan Sitong; in the northwest lies the tombs of Wan Banfu, who was the owner’s father, and Wan Sixuan, the owner’s son. Both men were accomplished. The mansion is a symbol of Zhejiang Province’s culture.
Tianfeng Tower is a brick-and-wood tower built in a typical southern-China style. It was a landmark for marine transportation in ancient times, witnessing the rise of ancient Ningbo port in the Tang Dynasty. Ningbo port, or Mingzhou port as it was called in ancient times, was a gateway into China for foreign envoys, students, and merchants. The tower was once described by A French in his research on China’s export: “Ningbo, the most beautiful Chinese city, is home to numerous relics. The most eye-catching…is the Chifeng Tower (i.e. TianfengTower)… On the tower’s wall was a painting depicting a French vessel that visited the port a year before.” The tower is a witness to the port’s history, a critical part of the Marine Silk Road.

Fufu Hall is a private library of Feng Mengzhuan, a contemporary book collector. The name denotes the dedication to knowledge. The hall faces the west and is a wooden structure. It exhibits pictures about the owner’s life stories and displays his publications.  
Shuibei Library is a two-storied building reconstructed in 1994. The owner, Xu Shidong, was a book collector in the Qing Dynasty. Living in the turbulent age after the Opium War, he lost many of his collections, but he managed to retrieve them.
Yintai Mansion, covering 2,300 m2 is a typical mansion of officials in the Qing Dynasty. It was rated as one of the 10 most creative museum items in the year of 2000. The owner was Tong Huai, who manage to become a Jinshi, a high scholarly title, despite his poor background. His sons also became Jinshi’s later. He was Emperor Guangxu’s teacher, and so the mansion was also known as the Emperor’s Teacher’s former residence.
